At best, the Dodgers were hoping pitcher Chad Billingsley could give them 80 or 90 pitches Saturday.
Unfortunately, at worst happened.
Billingsley struggled to get through the top of the first inning while making his first start in two weeks, and was gone by the time the Dodgers went back on the field to start the second inning. The Padres pounced on the rookie pitcher, then used the momentum to carry out a 11-2 win in front of 55,781 at Dodger Stadium.
In the process, the Padres drew to within one-half game of the first-place Dodgers in the tight National League West race. The two clubs resume their crucial four-game series this afternoon, with the Dodgers sending Derek Lowe to the mound against Chris Young.
