There were several reasons why former Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta chose to go after free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe two winters ago. There was the fact Lowe had reached double-digits in wins for four consecutive seasons, and there also was the fact that by the time the Dodgers got around to seriously pursuing him that January, most of the other available pitchers already had been snatched up.
But mostly, there was Lowe's ability to embrace the biggest of games on the biggest of stages.
