With the acquisition of Justin Speier, does that open the possibility of trading away Scot Shields and another pitcher for a power hitter?
-- Tom M., Burbank, Calif.
Speier adds depth to the bullpen, but that doesn't necessarily spell expendability for Shields. The Angels' bullpen is certainly stronger now than it was before they acquired Speier, but going three deep at the end of games has been a blueprint for the ballclub over the last few years.
Shields' name appears frequently in trade rumors as a number of clubs are interested in the right-hander. But the Angels would prefer to hang on to him and would part with the player that many in the organization have called their most valuable pitcher only if they could swing a deal that would impact the offense.
Dallas McPherson or Casey Kotchman could fill the role of the big bat if they can remain healthy. How do they figure in Angels management's plans?
-- Bernie G., Los Alamitos Calif.
Both figure into the team's future plans with Kotchman currently being the better fit. First base remains open and the club is hoping that Kotchman is able to recover fully from mononucleosis and return to the position. His glove would help improve team defense and his ability to swing the bat should also help the offense.
McPherson's case is a little more complicated. He has both the power and the defensive ability to solve the team's problems at third base, but back and hip injuries have sidelined him for stretches in each of the last two seasons. He also needs consistent at-bats to get in a groove. With the addition of Matthews in center, McPherson must now get past Chone Figgins, last season's primary center fielder, for the starting third baseman's job if both players find themselves in Angels uniforms come February.
