Vladimir Guerrero was named one of the American League's top hitters in 2006, an honor that is no surprise.
For the sixth time in his career and the third time with the Angels, Guerrero won a Louisville Silver Slugger Award, which is given annually to the best hitters at every position in their respective leagues.
"Vlad is a special player and a special talent," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He has been doing this for a long time."
The Silver Slugger winners were determined by a vote of Major League Baseball coaches and managers. The votes were for the players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in both the American and National leagues in 2006.
Selections were based on a combination of offensive statistics, including batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, as well as the coaches and managers' general impressions of a player's overall offensive value. Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.
Winning for the eighth consecutive year and ninth time overall was Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez, who tied former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin for third on the all-time Silver Slugger list. Only longtime Giants outfielder Barry Bonds with 12 such awards and free agent catcher Mike Piazza with 10 have won more.
Out of the 18 winners, 13 won for the first time. Other winners in the AL are Twins first baseman Justin Morneau and catcher Joe Mauer, second baseman Robinson Cano and shortstop Derek Jeter of the Yankees, White Sox third baseman Joe Crede and outfielder Jermaine Dye, and Boston designated hitter David Ortiz.
