1964 ; The Fantastic Cy Young Year Of Dean Chance
1964 ; THE FANTASTIC CY YOUNG YEAR OF DEAN CHANCE
Dean Chance, the pride of Wooster, Ohio and President of the
International Boxing Association. The IBA is continuing to grow in stature
within the structure of the boxing game.
What is sometimes forgotten is that Chance was a fine Major League
pitcher who stayed in the big leagues for ten years. Dean was born in Plain
Township, Ohio in 1941 and he debuted in the majors in 1961.
It was in 1964 that Chance left his mark in baseball. Dean had a
monster year that led to his winning the American League Cy Young award
while pitching for the Los Angeles Angels, the team he broke in with.
Dean's stats for that season would have garnered him a multi million
dollar contract these days. He appeared in 46 games, 35 of which he started.
He completed 15 of those games and tossed 11 shutouts. He worked 278.3
innings and he fanned 207 batters. His season record was 20-9, a .690
winning percentage. Dean's most impressive statistic may have been his
stingy 1.65 ERA. Amazing...By the way, Dean also saved four games ! What a
season !!!
