Default Angels in Royals

KANSAS CITY -- Rookie left-hander Joe Saunders struck out a career-high eight Royals as the Angels won, 5-2, in the opener of a two-game series Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Saunders pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits and three walks, one intentional. He threw 71 strikes in 115 pitches to pick up his sixth victory in his 11th start.

Robb Quinlan and Vladimir Guerrero hit solo home runs for the Angels, who have won 11 of their past 16. Guerrero's home run in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie.

It was Guerrero's 30th homer, a total he has reached in each of his seasons with the Angels. He has hit safely in 30 of his past 34 games.

Quinlan's home run in the second inning was his eighth and his first since Aug. 29.

Saunders worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth by striking out Emil Brown and Ryan Shealy. He also induced Brown to roll into an inning-ending double play in the third with two runners on base.

The Angels upped their lead to 4-1 in the seventh when Howie Kendrick's double scored pinch-runner Tommy Murphy. Mike Napoli's single brought home Kendrick.

Garret Anderson's single to right in the eighth scored Orlando Cabrera, who led off the inning with a single up the middle, making it 5-1.

The Royals got their only run off Saunders in the second when Paul Phillips' two-out single scored Angel Berroa. Scot Shields gave up a run in the eighth when Brown doubled and scored on Berroa's single.

Francisco Rodriguez worked the ninth for his 43rd save, despite loading the bases. He has converted 18 of his past 19 save opportunities and 29 of his past 31.

Well he's kind of had it in me ever since i accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace "accidentally" with "repeatedly" and replace "dog" with "son".

KANSAS CITY -- The Angels have survived with strong pitching this season, and that certainly got them through Wednesday night.

Starter Kelvim Escobar and relievers Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez combined on a five-hit shutout as the Angels defeated the Royals 3-0 to sweep this two-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Next stop is Oakland for a showdown series with playoff implications.

Orlando Cabrera drove in all three Angels' runs, matching his season high. His sacrifice fly in the second scored Adam Kennedy, who led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a Chone Figgins' sacrifice bunt.

Cabrera's two-out double down the left-field line in the ninth scored Garret Anderson, who opened the inning with a double, and Figgins, who had walked. It was Cabrera's 43rd double.

Escobar, who left his previous start after four innings with a sore left knee, limited the Royals to four hits, walked one and struck out five in seven innings. He threw 105 pitches, 64 for strikes, before departing.

Escobar gave up a two-out double to David DeJesus in the third and walked Esteban German, but retired Mike Sweeney on a fly ball to Anderson in left.
