CWS Jose Contreras, RHP (12-7, 4.09) White Sox (82-61)
@ LAA John Lackey, RHP (11-9, 3.54) Angels (77-66)
Scouting Report:
When the first two runners reached base against Contreras Wednesday in Boston, with David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez to follow, it looked like instant trouble for the struggling right-hander. But Contreras pitched out of danger and was dominant for eight innings, striking out nine in just his third victory since the All-Star Break but fourth against Boston since joining the White Sox. Contreras is 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA against the Angels this season, 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA lifetime at Angel Stadium and 1-2 with a 4.81 in his career against the Angels.
Lackey attempted the bend-but-don't-break method against the Orioles last Tuesday and it nearly worked. Until he gave up the tying run in the seventh inning, Lackey -–who let a runner reach second in all but one inning -- had seemingly induced the perfect ground ball or strikeout just when he needed it. He finished with a no-decision and a line of one run, nine hits, one walk and five strikeouts.

CWS Mark Buehrle, LHP (12-12, 4.80)
@LAA Ervin Santana, RHP (14-7, 4.53)
Scouting Report:
Just when Buehrle looked as if he was poised for a strong final month's run of five starts, a personal two-game winning streak came to a screeching halt Thursday at home against Cleveland. The left-hander allowed four earned runs on 10 hits over four-plus innings, striking out two and yielding two home runs, giving him 30 home runs allowed for the 2006 season. That total stands 10 higher than all of 2005. Buehrle is 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA this season against the Angels and is 1-1 with a 2.83 ERA lifetime at Angel Stadium.
Santana was victimized by the long ball against the Orioles on Wednesday, but worked around the three solo home runs to complete seven innings and pick up his staff-high 14th win. The right-hander finished having allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk, but has allowed four earned runs or more in four of his last five starts.
Wednesday, September 13 | 12:35 PM PT
CWS Freddy Garcia, RHP (13-9, 5.02)
@LAA Joe Saunders, LHP (5-2, 3.76)
Scouting Report:
Garcia pitched as well as he has in a long time, according to catcher A.J. Pierzynski, by allowing two earned runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings Friday against Cleveland, and setting a single-season high with eight strikeouts. The Angels always are a good match-up for Garcia, who is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA against them this year, and 13-3 with a 2.66 ERA lifetime. Garcia also has a 44-16 record during starts as part of afternoon contests, such as the one being played Wednesday.
Saunders threw a career-high 7 2/3 innings against a Blue Jays team that is notorious for hurting left-handed pitching. He commanded all of his pitches in the strike zone and used an array of ground balls to only allow one run on five hits. Aside from two disasters where the rookie didn't make it out of the third inning, Saunders has been dominant, with a 1.32 ERA in his other outings.
