ANAHEIM -- Tim Salmon insists that he'd be making contributions off the field even if he wasn't playing on one.
After looking at what the veteran has given back to the community, it's hard not to believe him.
By virtue of his support for two local charities, Family Solutions and Laurel Housing, Salmon was named the Angels' candidate for the Roberto Clemente Award.
The award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team. It is named in honor of the former Pirates outfielder whose spirit and goodwill will always be remembered. Clemente died in a plane crash while attempting to transport relief supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua on Dec. 31, 1972.
The winner will be announced during the World Series.
Salmon, who has made it known that this season will be his last, has used his stature as a Major Leaguer to help youth in Orange County.
