Not that the Angels are making excuses for their poor season, but they think that with a healthy Bartolo Colon they could be ahead of the Oakland A's in the American League West.
Colon wasn't right all season, going 1-5 with a 5.11 earned run average, before it was revealed he had a torn rotator cuff. Last year he was 21-8 with a 3.48 ERA and won the Cy Young Award.
"Losing Bart, it's a big blow," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "Yeah, I think we could contend, but we'd love to have Bart in the rotation."
Colon just began a 10-week program in Arizona with a physical therapist. When that ends, he will head back to the Dominican Republic. Like last season, the Angels will send trainers there to monitor his progress.
