SEATTLE -- Rosters will expand on Sept. 1, and the Angels are looking at a handful of players to join the club.
Catcher Jeff Mathis heads the list, while right-hander Chris Bootcheck will likely get called up to add depth to the bullpen. The Angels also would like to take a look at third baseman Dallas McPherson and first baseman Kendry Morales at some point but also must consider Triple-A Salt Lake's advancement to the postseason. The Bees have already clinched the North Division of the Pacific Coast League, their first such title since 2002.
"A third catcher is something we need as soon as we can," manager Mike Scioscia said. "You're always looking for bullpen depth because you want an arm to keep the arms you have fresh. We'll get some bullpen depth and some depth off the bench."
McPherson and Morales are two bats that could help the Angels offensively, but both players have recently returned from injury and the club would rather they play every day instead of sitting on the bench until Salt Lake's season is over.
"We want to keep guys ready and I think that we're at an advantage because of the Minor League playoffs," general manager Bill Stoneman said. "We could run into a situation with an injury where we really need a player and we could call someone up very quickly."
