ANAHEIM -- Garret Anderson atoned for his mistake in the top of the seventh with a go-ahead single in the bottom of the frame and led the Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Anderson smoked a two-out single to right field that scored Vladimir Guerrero and broke a 3-3 tie. The hit came less than 10 minutes after a poorly timed dive allowed David Ortiz to score from first base on a Kevin Youkilis double.

The Angels' left fielder had tied the game at 2-2 in the third when he plated Orlando Cabrera on a groundout to second. The run came home a play after Guerrero skied a ball into right field that eluded a trio of Red Sox defenders and dropped in for a double, putting Cabrera on third.

The Red Sox went ahead, 2-1, in the third after Chone Figgins sped across center field and nearly made an inning-ending catch on a Wily Mo Pena's drive to left-center. But the ball glanced off the heel of Figgins' outstretched glove and fell in, allowing the Red Sox to score to twice on the error.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- David Ortiz and Wily Mo Pena hit two-run homers and the Boston Red Sox snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.

Manny Ramirez was back in Boston's starting lineup after making his first pinch-hitting appearance of the season in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 4-3 loss. But he lasted only three innings because of a sore left knee after chasing Juan Rivera's two-run single in the third and grounding out his first two times up.

Jon Lester (7-2) beat Kelvim Escobar in a rematch of their July 28 matchup at Fenway Park, when Escobar and the Angels won 8-3. The Boston left-hander threw 96 pitches over five innings, allowing three runs, six hits and four walks.

Lester labored through the fifth with a 5-3 lead, giving up a walk and a single before Vladimir Guerrero grounded into a double play and Rivera popped out one pitch later.

The Angels got a run closer in the sixth after loading the bases with one out against Julian Tavarez. Tim Salmon scored when Chone Figgins barely beat shortstop Alex Cora's relay throw on a potential inning-ending double-play grounder to second.
