Default Mariners @ Angels

Kelvim Escobar pitched a dominant seven innings and the Angels used two sacrifice flies and one big blow on Thursday to kick off a 10-game homestand the way they wanted, beating the Mariners, 5-2 at Angel Stadium.

Escobar (9-10) allowed only one run, which came on a double-play groundout, to improve to 4-1 in his last five decisions. He allowed seven hits, six of them singles, and struck out seven.

Vladimir Guerrero served up the game-breaking hit when he drilled a two-out, bases-clearing double to the gap in right-center in the seventh inning. After being walked in his two previous at-bats, the Mariners had nowhere to put the All-Star, and Guerrero increased the Angels lead to 5-1.

Chone Figgins, who went 3-for-4, started the third with a single. The speedster went to third on Maicer Izturis' grounder up the middle, and Orlando Cabrera drove Figgins home on a sacrifice fly to put the Angels ahead, 1-0.

Garret Anderson raced out to his second triple of the year when left fielder Raul Ibanez was slow getting to his opposite-field smash in the fourth. Howie Kendrick made sure his teammate's hustle paid off and, after Tim Salmon struck out, sent Anderson home with a sacrifice fly to left.

Jered Weaver's record-tying ninth straight win may have been his best yet. He three-hit the Mariners for seven shutout innings in a 3-0 win on Friday night. The rookie tied Yankees Hall of Famer Whitey Ford's 1950 AL mark for consecutive wins to start a career.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Seattle Mariners have tried just about everything to end their losing skid. They even started Ichiro Suzuki in center field on Sunday.
Most Consecutive Division Losses
Single Season, Division Era (since '69)
20 Mariners June 13-present
16 Diamondbacks July 9-Aug. 31, 2004
16 Rockies June 27-Aug. 6, 1993
Nothing has worked.

Chone Figgins singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Angels beat Seattle 3-2 Sunday to send the Mariners to their 11th straight loss.

"Miserable comes to mind. The others you can't print," manager Mike Hargrove said, trying to describe the skid. "It's a good time for a day off. Our guys have shown up every day to play, no matter the circumstances. Eventually, this thing will end."

Seattle's losing streak is its longest since September 1992, when the Mariners dropped a club-record 14 straight. All 11 losses have come on this road trip, the first winless trip of 11 or more games in the franchise's 30-year history.

"I don't know if there's a word to describe it," said Seattle closer J.J. Putz, who surrendered Figgins' hit. "There's been games where we haven't played very well, and games where we've played really well and just didn't get the 'W.'

The Mariners have lost 20 straight games against AL West opponents, extending their major-league record for consecutive losses within a team's own division and tying the mark for consecutive losses against any division. The Montreal Expos lost 20 straight against the NL West in 1969, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
