Unable to shake muscle discomfort in his left shoulder and neck area, Brendan Donnelly met with a chiropractor Monday for the first time in his career.
Donnelly, who turns 35 today, blames it all on old age. His pain is akin to a knot in his trapezius muscle and it affects him when he raises his glove hand in front of his body just before he delivers a pitch out of the stretch.
Donnelly said the pain first surfaced 10-12 days ago but he was able to pitch through it. He wasn't as fortunate Saturday, though, when he walked three batters, gave up a hit and allowed two runs in a third of an inning against the Dodgers.
"I thought about (not pitching Saturday), but I went out there before and I was still getting people out," Donnelly said. "I was getting kind of lucky. I was making one good pitch per at-bat and I happened to get the guy out on that pitch."
Before the rocky outing, Donnelly had showed that he was worthy of some late-inning assignments.
In his 11 previous outings, (11<MD+,%30,%55,%70>2/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>3 innings) Donnelly had not allowed a run. He has limited right-handed hitters to a .200 average this season.
