Default Jered Weaver's return could cost his brother

The fans have clamored for Jered Weaver to return since the Angels demoted him to Triple-A Salt Lake a couple of weeks ago. When his older brother, Jeff, struggled again Tuesday night, some of the fans began chanting, "Bring back Jered!"

The fans might soon get their wish.

Manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday promoting the younger Weaver is one of the possibilities being explored after Jeff Weaver slipped to 3-10 with Tuesday's performance.

Jered Weaver dominated again for Salt Lake on Wednesday, striking out 11 in Colorado Springs. He won all four of his starts for the Angels and is 6-1 with a 2.10 ERA at Salt Lake.

"The way Jered has been pitching, both up here and at Triple-A, it has provided us with some depth that I'm sure we'll tap into at some point," Scioscia said. "There are a lot of things we're looking at and considering. We need to keep moving ahead as a team and an organization. We'll see how things pan out."

It seems unlikely the Angels could trade Jeff Weaver now unless they are willing to pay a good chunk of the remaining $4.2million of his contract. To make room for Jered, the Angels likely would have to move Jeff to the bullpen or designate him for assignment.

Only one other AL pitcher, Tampa Bay's Seth McClung, has 10 losses. Scioscia emphasized starting pitching has not been the biggest problem.

"We always explore things that can make us a better club, but our Achilles' heel doesn't lie in what's happening in our rotation," Scioscia said. "You're certainly not going to single out one guy."
