Beating the deadline by minutes for the second year in a row, Kansas City signed power-hitting high school infielder Eric Hosmer on Friday night to a minor league contract with a US$6-million bonus. Hosmer receive the most for a Royals draft pick, topping pitcher Luke Hochevar's $5.3 million guarantee last year. Hosmer, drafted third overall, is a left-handed power hitter who could provide the run production so desperately needed by the offensively impoverished and perennially last-place Royals. They went into their weekend series at New York near the bottom of the American League in runs, RBIs and home runs.
