Royals infielder Jason Smith designated for assignment
Royals infielder Jason Smith was designated for assignment on Friday, making room on the 40-man roster as catcher Miguel Olivo’s contract was finally approved by Major League Baseball.
Smith played 40 games for the Royals last year, hitting .188 with six homers and 14 RBIs. His place with the Royals was clouded once they traded for Alberto Callaspo, who replaces Smith as the backup shortstop.
The Royals have 10 days from the move to decide what to do with Smith. He could be traded, put through waivers or released. Smith, 30, has played parts of seven seasons with seven clubs and played four positions for the Royals last year.
Olivo’s contract is for $2.1 million guaranteed in 2008 with incentives that could push it to about $2.8 million.
There is a mutual option for next year that would be for $2.7 million guaranteed with incentives up to about $3.4 million.
