KANSAS CITY -- A year ago, Mike Sweeney donated money for an inner-city baseball stadium. This year, he and his wife Shara will celebrate the inauguration of the stadium.
Sweeney gave $100,000 for the Sweeney Family Field, which will have an opening ceremony on Sept. 18 at 43rd and Cleveland in Kansas City.
"It's come from an area where kids were solicited into gangs and selling drugs to a baseball field built with the help of RBI and our donation," Sweeney said. "It's a place where kids can fulfill their dreams rather than have them shattered."
The Sweeneys have been active in the RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) program that is operated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City with the support of Major League Baseball. It's the RBI program that will benefit from the new stadium.
