It’s just past midnight last Monday as the clubhouse doors swing open and the newest Royals pitcher struts through with his teammates for the first time. Odalis Perez is easy to find in this crowd of ballplayers — just listen.
He’s the loud one, the bilingual comedian cracking dirty jokes in English and Spanish. His new team is on track for another 100-loss season. His old team, the Dodgers, is in the midst of a pennant race.
You would think it’s the other way around as he tosses his bag into a Kauffman Stadium locker and looks around, taking inventory of his new life.
“Ah,” he says. “It’s clean. It’s beautiful. My mind is fresh. It’s like a whole new beginning.”
