KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA (TICKER) —Just days after suffering multiple hand and knee injuries in an accident at home, Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence was feeling well enough to sign a one-year contract Friday.
Pence was one of 11 players to ink contracts for 2008, along with righthanders Paul Estrada, Samuel Gervacio, Ryan Houston, Brad James, Chad Reineke and Chris Sampson; lefthanders Mark McLemore and Wesley Wright; catchers J.R. Towles and Humberto Quintero.
The Astros revealed Tuesday that Pence had been hurt the previous night when he fell through a sliding glass door at his spring training home. But the 24-year-old center fielder was back in action Friday, going through light exercises with the team.
“Hunter threw earlier this morning in our long toss and said everything was fine,” Astros manager Cecil Cooper said. “He felt good. He actually wanted to do more than what we wanted to let him do.
“We are just going to have him throwing a little soft toss and hitting off a tee and that’s it. We are going to kind of keep a hammer on him a little bit, because we don’t want him to go crazy.”
