The Intriguing First-Timers of 2010
2010 will be quite the intriguing year for the Hall of Fame inductions process, as there are four legitimate candidates that will be on the ballot for the first time. They are:
Edgar Martinez, DH.312/.418/.515, 1219 R, 309 HR, 1261 RBI, seven time All-Star, five Silver Sluggers, led AL in average twice, OBP three times, doubles twice, RBI once, and OPS once. Barry Larkin, SS.295/.371/.444, 1329 R, 198 HR, 960 RBI, 379 SB, twelve time All-Star, three Gold Gloves, nine Silver Sluggers, one MVP. Roberto Alomar, 2B.300/.371/.443, 1508 R, 210 HR, 1134 RBI, 474 SB, twelve time All-Star, ten Gold Gloves, four Silver Sluggers, led AL in runs once. Fred McGriff, 1B.284/.377/.509, 1349 R, 493 HR, 1550 RBI, five time All-Star, three Silver Sluggers, led AL in OPS once, led NL in home runs twice. In my mind, Barry Larkin and Roberto Alomar should be locks, as both are among the best ever at their respective positions. Edgar Martinez is, in all likelihood, the greatest DH to play the game - but I cannot get fully past his not playing in the field to a significant degree... however, given that the DH is a legitimate position, I feel he deserves to be in.
McGriff, to me, is questionable. His numbers are solid across the board - but nothing really stands out. And, as has been said before, it's the Hall of Fame, and not the 'Hall of Very Good.' McGriff is borderline for me - I'd likely say no, though.
