Mark McGwire, the player who did not want to talk about the past, will learn how his achievements are viewed in the present when the voting for the Hall of Fame is announced Tuesday. Unless hundreds of writers experienced stunning reversals in the past year regarding their feelings about McGwire, he is not expected to be voted into the Hall.

I am not of the mindset that hitting 'x' benchmark should garner automatic induction. McGwire was a one-dimensional player and, in my mind, his prodigous power did not make up for his inadequacies in making contact, fielding, and running the bases.

Moreover, I do take character into account to some degree - and his shadiness in recent years is fairly disturbing.
