The Marlins on Friday added another candidate to play third base, signing infielder Jorge Cantu to a one-year minor-league contract.

Cantu, who turns 26 on Jan. 30, will compete in spring training with former Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Jose Castillo to plug the vacancy created Dec. 5 when Miguel Cabrera was traded to the Detroit Tigers.
