Nolasco goes to disabled list
Nolasco goes to disabled list
Quote:
MIAMI -- Warning signs surfaced on Friday when Marlins right-hander Ricky Nolasco's fastball was repeatedly clocked between 84-87 mph.
The 24-year-old right-hander struggled in his 1 1/3 inning relief stint against the Phillies, hanging a breaking ball that Pat Burrell crushed for a three-run homer.
Concerned that Nolasco wasn't right, the team scheduled an MRI exam on the 24-year-old's right elbow.
Playing it safe, Nolasco was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to April 7, with a tender elbow.
Nolasco was scheduled to make his first start of the season on Tuesday at home against the Brewers, but the nod now will go to 21-year-old right-hander Rick Vanden Hurk, a native of the Netherlands, who was recalled from Double-A Carolina.
"After Friday, it wasn't right, so we decided to get it checked out," said Nolasco, who was 11-11 with a 4.82 ERA as a rookie in 2006. "[An MRI] came back negative. We'll play it safe. It's a long season."
The drop in velocity Friday raised a red flag with Nolasco and the team.
"It's a concern," Nolasco said. "That's not where I usually pitch at. Something definitely didn't feel right."
