Marlins at the plate: Miguel Cabrera didn't take long to showcase his tremendous power. The slugger walked in the first inning and then homered to left field in the third, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Jeremy Hermida connected on a one-out home run, evening the score at 2. Mike Jacobs had an RBI single in three at-bats, and Robert Andino had a double that brought in a run after an error. Eric Reed had a two-run single in a three-run seventh inning that rallied the Marlins to a 9-7 lead. Joe Borchard's three-run homer in the eighth broke the game open.

Hurricanes at the plate: For the Hurricanes, ranked 12th in the Baseball America poll, Roger Tomas and Gus Menendez each doubled off Chris Volstad. Jemile Weeks, the brother of Brewers second baseman Ricky Weeks, had an RBI single in five at-bats. Ryan Jackson walked with the bases loaded and Richard O'Brien had an RBI fielder's choice in a two-run fourth inning. The Hurricanes scored five runs in the sixth. Ben Vazquez had a pinch-hit two-run double.

Marlins on the mound: Volstad, the organization's top prospect out of Palm Beach Gardens, tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up two doubles while striking out two. Volstad's fastball was clocked between 90-93 mph. He threw 34 pitches with 22 strikes.

Hurricanes on the mound: Right-hander John Housey started and tossed a scoreless first inning. Housey walked Cabrera and gave up an infield single to Josh Willingham. The freshman was drafted in the 42nd round by Cincinnati last year.

Up next: The Marlins visit the Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. ET in the Grapefruit League opener for both clubs. Scott Olsen is slated to pitch about two innings, or 35 pitches. St. Louis is going with Adam Wainwright, who also is on a 35-pitch limit.
