Mets Trade Dickey to Toronto: It Was the Right Move
Quote:
Think a Cy Young guarantees another year with your team? Think again. After discussion about the Mets and Jays getting serious on R.A. Dickey struck, it's finally happened.
Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey put up the most terrific season of his baseball career, and was rewarded with the honorable Cy Young award. But now, he's headed elsewhere. The New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays have come to agreements that will send Dickey pitching as a Jay.
A ... for 2-years, allowed Toronto and the Mets to put the finishing touches on their trade. Dickey will also receive a $12 million option in 2016.
Thankfully for Dickey, he will finally receive the dollar value he has been striving for, but the Mets couldn't provide. A majority of his payroll will come out directly, but some will be introduced during his salary, which is $5 million. The odd-set here is thanks to the different tax-rates the States and Canadian public pay.
In return, the Mets have the better hand in this trade. They will receive the highly sought after catcher, Travis d'Arnaud, Minor Leaguer Noah Syndergaard, and young 18-year old Wulium Beccerca. In addition the teams will be swapping John Buck, sending him to the Mets, for catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas.
After Dickey smoked the league with a 2.73 ERA, and reached the golden 20-win mark, you'd think the Mets would be foolish to rid of such a player, and although it may be obtuse, it was actually the better move.
Dickey, age 37, is climbing up the ranks in not only age, but versatility as well. Taking into consideration that Dickey has a lifetime ERA of 3.98, and, for that matter, has not been the consistent player the Mets want. Although Dickey did through a Cy Young season this year, think; when's the next time he'll do that -- will it be next year, or will he throw a horrific, losing season like he has done before?
Dickey prolonged the negotiations, as he was pushing for a contract worth at least $26 million ...

Nice piece! I think both teams made the right move. The Blue Jays are pushing to compete in the wide open AL East, they are capitalizing on the rare occurrence that the most powerful division in baseball is up for grabs. The Mets need young talent and less on their payroll for the years to come. They want to build a contender around David Wright and have an excellent class of prospects.

Thanks! I agree with you on that! The Blue Jays, and Mets, both picked up great players, but I think the Mets had the upperhand after receiving John Buck and d'Arnaud.. two great players, and both fill up the posistions the Mets needed to fill up. The Blue Jays got Dickey, but that's all. Granted, picking up Dickey was a great move because it filled their rotation.
All in all, you're right. Both teams made great moves.
And about the Wright statement; excellent point! I failed to recognize that, and I'm glad you prompted it! Having Buck and d'Arnaud around Wright will be a great thing to have. It's just like the Giants; They only have 1-2 main superstars, but those same guys are surrounded by average players who play hard.. bringing up the whole team.
