Fox cameras caught Detroit pitcher Kenny Rogers with a substance on his pitching hand Sunday in the network's telecast of Game 2 of the World Series, and the information quickly made it to the field. But nothing was done about it other than Rogers removing the smudge, which he called "a big clump of dirt.'' That ignited a firestorm of controversy for the nation's sporting media Monday, a day off in the Series.
Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti, who also is a panelist on ESPN's "Around the Horn,'' blasted away.
"Why did Tony La Russa, the St. Louis manager, not raise holy hell and demand that the umpires investigate when it could have meant the difference between Rogers staying in the game ... or being thrown out of the game and maybe the rest of the World Series?'' he wrote. "... The rule book never should be more sacred than when a championship is at stake.''
