Instead, Dmitri Young’s comeback with the Detroit Tigers ended abruptly and somewhat mysteriously Wednesday, when the Tigers released their troubled designated hitter after a 4-3, 10-inning loss to Seattle.
General manager Dave Dombrowski insisted that the decision was simply “performance-related,” even though Young hit .292 in the six weeks since he returned from drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and batted third for the Tigers on Wednesday. Dombrowski and manager Jim Leyland would say little else, but club sources suggested that Young had become more trouble than he was worth, that other players were complaining and that he was an unnecessary distraction for a team trying to hold onto first place with 22 games left in the season.
