The man who earned the sympathy of baseball three years ago is recognized almost as much now for his sympathy for others.
Three years after becoming the first 20-loss pitcher since 1980, Maroth is pitching in a pennant race with a chance to make a difference. In the community, however, his difference has been felt for years. It's why for the second consecutive year, Maroth is being honored as the Tigers' nominee for Major League Baseball's prestigious Roberto Clemente Award.
Originally called the Commissioner's Award, the honor was renamed following the passing of the legendary Pirates star who lost his life in a plane crash on Dec. 31, 1972, while trying to deliver relief supplies to Nicaragua after that country was devastated by an earthquake. It's handed out each year to the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.
