This isn't going to do much to soothe the nerves of anxious Detroit Tiger fans, but history shows that the Tigers entered the final month of the season with an extremely good chance of holding onto their lead in the American League Central Division.
Before they began September with a Friday night game against Los Angeles, the Tigers led second-place Chicago by 4 1/2 games. Since division play began in 1969, 87 of the 90 teams that have entered September with at least a 4 1/2-game lead held onto it.
