At this point in the season, manager Jim Leyland has to be very careful with his players, particularly with those who have been injured in the past.
Saturday night, he rested right fielder Magglio Ordonez and played Marcus Thames in right field.
"Magglio was told (Friday) afternoon at 3 o'clock that he wasn't going to play (Saturday)," Leyland said. "I'm giving him a blow. His body's tired, he's sore and I'm just giving him a day off because I want to play him in the day game against the lefty (today)."
Ordonez missed a lot of the last two seasons because of a knee injury and a hernia.
