Think of it this way: The happily-ever-after ending is what the Tigers have been doing all year. Bouncing back late and giving the fans what they want. Sending themselves home happy.
This year, not getting it done is the surprise.
Which is why the way the Tigers' 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday night also was surprising.
With Craig Monroe's leadoff triple in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers brought a sellout crowd to its feet once again. How were they going to do it this time?
Hmm, a leadoff triple followed by a flurry of other big hits? That's different. The Tigers haven't done it that way before. Well, they didn't do it this time, either.
Following the triple -- when probably everyone in the park except the Rangers expected something different to transpire than what actually did -- the Tigers stepped up to the moment. And fizzled.
