Rookie right-hander Joel Zumaya received a big hand as he entered Wednesday night's game. He charged to the mound to guard the one-run lead that Brandon Inge had just provided with a lead-changing home run.
The crowd got louder and louder as Zumaya fanned his first hitter, Michael Cuddyer, on three pitches -- all of them called strikes -- and the last at 101 m.p.h.
Zumaya's next pitch was above the belt. He made it to the Twins' best slugger in almost two decades, Justin Morneau.
Morneau pulled it down the rightfield line for a two-run homer. The blow offset Inge's two-run homer the previous inning, and it gave Minnesota a 4-3 win in the rubber game of the series before 36,339 at Comerica Park.
It was the first time in more than two months that the Tigers lost a one-run game at home and lost a series at home. Zumaya (6-2) lost for the first time at home this season.
