Elden Auker, a submarine-style pitcher who struck out Babe Ruth, faced Dizzy Dean and helped the Tigers win their first World Series championship, died Friday at 95 in in Vero Beach, Fla.
Auker went 130-101 for the Tigers, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Browns from 1933-42. He pitched for the Tigers' 1934 American League championship team and the 1935 World Series champions.
"He threw it from about as low as you could go without untying your shoes," Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller said by telephone Friday.
MSU set to extend Mason's contract
Michigan State athletic director Ron Mason's contract is expected to be extended during the school's board of trustees meeting next month, university representative Terry Denbow said.
Mason is entering his fifth year as athletic director following 23 years as the hockey coach at Michigan State.
His current contract expires next summer. He is likely to stay for another year or two after that.
