Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said he liked the idea of trading for slugging Washington leftfielder Alfonso Soriano. What he liked more was keeping minor league outfield prospect Cameron Maybin.
That's why the Tigers' trade talks for Soriano "never went anywhere," Dombrowski said Monday, a few hours after the trade deadline passed.
Dombrowski said that two weeks ago, Washington general manager Jim Bowden asked that Maybin be included in any Soriano trade. Maybin, 19, is a centerfielder who was the Tigers' top pick in last year's draft. He leads the Midwest League with a .335 batting average, playing at Class A West Michigan.
