Weeks of mystery surrounding Dmitri Young's absence from the Tigers' clubhouse, as well as his future in Detroit, turned dramatically clearer Wednesday.
The Tigers announced Young would begin today a conditioning stretch at their Lakeland, Fla., complex ahead of a rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.
"I don't expect him to be back (in Detroit) for three to four weeks, at the earliest," said Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers president and general manager.
Young, 32, had been on the disabled list since May 22 because of a quadriceps strain that clearly had nothing to do with his extended time away from the team. It was reported this month by WDFN 1130 that Young had been admitted to California's Betty Ford Clinic for addiction recovery.
Dombrowski stuck to club policy and would not discuss Young's absence beyond referring to its cause as "personal issues."
Young was flying to Lakeland and was scheduled to begin a regimen today that will put him in "baseball shape," said Dombrowski, who has been in phone contact with Young.
