Game One- Aaron Harang vs Brandon Webb
Overview: Reds gave up the lead in the first off of an error and wild pitch...almost a "Here we go again!" feeling for Reds fans. lol Harang gives up two single shots in the third making it a 3-0 lead for the D-Backs. But hope (and cheers!) come in the fourth when Phillips hits a triple to score Griffey. And Dunn follows up with a botched hit to first thats good enough to get Phillips in making it a 3-2 game. Harang comes back out after the fourth with some good stuff and finishes off the next two innings. Both Starters leave the game with 6 innings pitched, 3 hits, 6 strikeouts, and a 3.00 era.
After the reliefs come in Burton gives up a solo shot in the 7th (2 SO) but the Reds couldn't put together the run the needed in the end. I expected a hard game against Webb...I saw some good things and we'll hopefully get these next two!!
Game Two- Bronson Arroyo vs Dan Haren
Overview: So we started off a little shaky in this one...surrendered a double to start the game and a ground out that scored Young. Stephen Drew got a solo shot off of Arroyo in the second...Bronson had a iffy 3rd (walking 2 and not checking base runners on a 2 man steal), great 4th (2K's and a Fly out), and a 5th that was lucky only 2 runs were allowed. (A pitcher getting a double off of you is always a bad sign)
The 5th inning from Arroyo was a surprise with the 3 run (Patterson lead off, Phillips Hr) momentum changing inning we had in the bottom 4th. All in all Arroyo finished allowing 4 hits/runs, walked 3, but had 5 K's with a 3.60 era. Overall the game just looked worse than the numbers show.
After Coffey came in an allowed his one run all pretty much seemed lost. The offense just could not get anything together. UNTIL the ninth! Phillips with the lead off single then the Dunn single...Encarnacion shows bunt but with two strikes gets the call to swing away and GOODNIGHT! A three run homer in the bottom 9th sends us home with a 6-5 win!
**Special Note: Welcome back Kent Mercker! He only pitch one inning but 2K's and a Fly out is a great way to come back after missing so much time being injured. Its good to have him back.
Game Three- Johnny Cueto vs Doug Davis
Overview: The only thing any Reds fan wants to say about this is "Johnny Cueto, Johnny Cueto, Johnny Cueto!" Through seven innings 10 strikeouts, no walks at all, and a 1.29 era. In fact the only player to even see the touch a base outside of home plate was Justin Upton who absolutely blasted one off of Cueto in the 6th.
Stormy Weathers came up after Cueto and could not consitently find the plate to save his life. In not even a full inning he allowed 3 walks (loaded the bases) before being relieved by Lincoln. And of course Cordero came in to finish the game off with 2 fly outs and a K to end it.
This was the perfect example of a beautifully awful game. Cueto was amazing...the Weathers inning of pitching left you worried. And you ask yourself why after a game Cueto had? Because we literally kept the Diamondbacks in this game...count them 15 men left on base! This game shouldnt have been anywhere close to what it was. Were lucky to have gotten this one and didnt let the bullpen lose another great outing like in the past...
