Reds Cut Stanton Loose
Quote:
Mike Stanton's Reds' career probably has ended after one season, which is 82 fewer than Al Lang Field got in its final day of service here Friday.
The Reds made their final road trip of the spring a memorable one, as Reds manager Dusty Baker inadvertently let it slip before the game that Reds were cutting Stanton, meaning they are eating $3.5 million ($3 million contract this year, $500,000 for an option next year), as the bullpen continues to get leaner and meaner.
Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky did not get into specifics but did confirm the news.
We talked to Mike this morning," Krivsky said. "It was a very tough conversation."Last season Stanton was 1-3 with a 5.93 ERA. He signed a two-year deal starting with 2007 and had a one-year option for 2009.
Stanton, 40, had become a poster boy for the middle- and late-inning bullpen ineptitude last season that haunted the team and its fans, although by no means was it all Stanton's fault.
The Reds have done much to improve that bullpen this past offseason. Eating $3.5 million in contractual obligations to Stanton indicates the Reds believe they can win this season.
