Default Cubs' first punch KO's Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- The jump from Class AA to the majors is a test for any player. But for Cubs pitcher Carlos Marmol, the tests first began in 2003 when the team chose to make the catcher/outfielder a pitcher.

Marmol, 23, couldn't hit well enough to be an everyday player, but his whip-like arm could put velocity into a fastball. In ideal circumstances, the young right-hander who was a Class A Midwest League and Florida State all-star in 2004 and an improving starter at Class AA West Tenn in 2005 still would be honing his skills.

But the 2006 Cubs season has been anything but ideal -- all to the good fortune of Marmol and a handful of rookie pitchers like him.
