Red Sox put Beckett on DL, activate Casey
TOKYO -- First baseman Sean Casey's stiff neck improved enough for the Boston Red Sox to keep him on the active roster for the the first two games of the season against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
But ace right-hander Josh Beckett, who did not make the trip, was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 19 with a lower back strain. He is eligible to come off the list April 3. Francona indicated there was a chance he could pitch in the three-game series in Toronto starting April 4.
