To nobody’s surprise, David Ortiz received a healthy round of boos when he stepped to the plate in the first inning of the first game of yesterday’s day-night doubleheader between the Red Sox and Yankees.
The booing was loud and it was long, and, more than all that, it was also a message: Yankees fans were letting Big Papi know they didn’t appreciate comments he made about whether the Bombers’ Derek Jeter deserved to be this year’s American League Most Valuable Player.
But Ortiz delivered a message of his own: He slammed a double to right. He doubled in his next at-bat before the Yanks did the sensible thing and walked the guy the next three times he came to the plate.
