Jonathan Papelbon did not understand all of the doctor lingo, but he knew enough to figure out his worst fears about his pitching shoulder had not come true.
The rookie closer, as well his manager, teammates and many worried fans in Red Sox Nation, were afraid he had suffered a possible tear to his rotator cuff or labrum last week, only the results from an MRI/arthrogram taken yesterday essentially revealed nothing more disturbing than a tired arm.
“My immediate reaction (to the news) was ‘Phew! Thank the Lord,’ ” a smiling Papelbon said after the Red Sox’ 1-0 shutout over the White Sox last night, “because labrum tears are pretty tough to come back from. It’s just a matter of time right now, and trying to figure out when I’m going to be able to come back. I’m just taking it day-by-day from here on out.”
