From the moment a David Wells trade was rumored, it became increasingly evident that the Red Sox were on the cusp of suspending their chase for a 2006 playoff berth.
So it was no surprise when the Red Sox finally made it official last night: Wells was shipped to San Diego for a player to be named later, likely minor league catcher George Kottaras.
In an odd twist, Wells will make his Padres debut tomorrow at Petco Park against Cincinnati and right-hander Bronson Arroyo, himself traded away by the Red Sox during spring training.
