Olson Sent Back to AAA
Quote:
OAKLAND -- The Orioles made an expected move Thursday when they optioned rookie southpaw Garrett Olson back to Triple-A Norfolk in order to make room for starting pitcher Steve Trachsel, who is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list prior to Saturday's game against Oakland. Trachsel has missed two starts due to a strained gluteus.
Baltimore elected to use two off days to reset its rotation, which meant that Olson wouldn't have been able to start again until July 28. Interim manager Dave Trembley said earlier in the week that he didn't think Olson could benefit from pitching out of the bullpen, and that the left-hander would be better served to start every five days at Triple-A Norfolk.
"It would be different if there was a set and scripted time when he was going to come in the game," Trembley said. "If you can definitely say that somebody else is going to throw five innings and he'd be the first guy in after that -- kind of like what Oakland and Texas did a few years ago -- [it might make sense]. ...I don't know if he's ever pitched out of the bullpen, and myself personally, I don't think it is a good idea at this point in time of his career."
