Hernandez awes his new team
Since joining his new organization, Luis Hernandez has made a favorable impression.
After hitting .256 in 123 games for Triple-A Richmond and Double-A Mississippi in 2006, Hernandez was claimed off waivers by the Orioles in October. The 22-year-old shortstop showed some promise at the plate with the Tiburones de La Guaira.
Hernandez was among the top hitters in the Venezuelan Winter League, batting .323 with 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored in 49 games.
Here's how the other Orioles prospects fared in various Winter Leagues:
Arizona Fall League
Bryan Bass, 3B -- Bass hit just .119 with a triple, two doubles and two RBIs in 19 games with the Grand Canyon Rafters.
Adam Donachie, C -- Donachie batted .360 with a home run, three doubles and four RBIs in 12 games for the Rafters. The 22-year-old backstop hit safely in three of his last four contests.
Jeff Fiorentino, OF -- After hitting .322 over the first four-plus weeks of the AFL season, Fiorentino cooled off in November. He finished with a .263 average, three home runs and 11 RBIs in 26 games for Grand Canyon. The 23-year-old had a six-game hitting streak from Oct. 19-26.
Ryan Hubele, C -- Hubele split the season between the Rafters and the Phoenix Desert Dogs and hit .182 with two doubles and two RBIs in 10 games. Both doubles and RBIs came during a three-game stint with Grand Canyon.
Ryan Keefer, RHP -- Despite going 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA for Grand Canyon, Keefer was largely effective down the stretch. The 25-year-old right-hander gave up only one run over his final five games, a span of five innings.
Nolan Reimold, OF -- The Bowling Green product hit .284 with one home run, nine RBIs and 15 runs scored in 25 games with the Rafters. He posted a .406 on-base percentage and batted .375 (12-for-32) with runners in scoring position.
Dustin Yount, 1B -- The son of Hall of Famer Robin Yount batted .192 (5-for-26) with four RBIs in nine games with the Rafters.
Hawaii Winter Baseball
Paco Figueroa, 2B -- Figueroa hit .264 with a home run and 16 RBIs while posting a .383 on-base percentage in 31 games with the Honolulu Sharks. The University of Miami product also scored 20 runs and stole 11 bases in 15 attempts over 31 games.
Ryan Finan, 1B -- Finan appeared in 22 games for Honolulu and hit .147 (10-for-68) with a home run and five RBIs. His only homer was a three-run shot in the season finale against Waikiki on Nov. 21.
Bruce Gallaway, LHP -- The 24-year-old Texan was 1-0 with a 4.19 ERA in 15 games. He struck out 16 over 19 1/3 innings, held opponents to a .197 batting average and did not allow an earned run over his final three outings.
David Haehnel, LHP -- Haehnel was 2-0 with six saves and a 5.00 ERA in 18 games, although opponents did hit .307 against him.
Jeffrey Moore, RHP -- Moore went 1-4 with a 3.61 ERA over eight games, including seven starts, for Honolulu. Through 32 2/3 innings, the North Carolina native struck out 26 batters and walked nine. His best outing came in his penultimate start of the season on Nov. 10, when he held the North Shore Honu to one hit and fanned six over five scoreless innings.
Jonathan Tucker, 2B -- Tucker struggled with Honolulu, hitting .143 in seven games. He joined North Shore and batted .262 with three doubles, a triple and 12 RBIs in 25 games. The 23-year-old infielder hit in six straight games from Nov. 14-20.
Dominican Winter League
Francis Beltran, RHP -- The 27-year-old right-hander was 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in six appearances for the Tigres del Licey, striking out one and walking five over four innings.
Fredy Deza, RHP -- Deza went 1-1 with five saves and a 2.57 ERA in 16 games for the Azucareros del Este. In the playoffs, the 24-year-old right-hander was the only member of the Azucareros (1-16) to earn a victory, recording a 2.31 ERA over 11 2/3 innings.
Franklyn Gracesqui, LHP -- The 27-year-old southpaw posted a 3-1 record with one save and a 5.17 ERA in 21 games for the Leones del Escogido. Over 15 2/3 innings, he struck out 26 batters.
Jeremy Guthrie, RHP -- The 27-year-old went 0-1 with a 2.63 ERA in five starts with the Aguilas Cibaenas. Claimed off waivers by the Orioles on Jan. 29, Guthrie allowed eight earned runs over 27 1/3 innings and limited opponents to a .200 batting average. He did not pitch in the playoffs.
Carlos Jan, LHP -- Jan recorded a 0.82 ERA and held opponents to a .205 average over 11 innings in 14 games with the Estrellas de Oriente.
Radhames Liz, RHP -- Liz went 0-1 with a 2.42 ERA in 26 innings with the Estrellas de Oriente. Opponents hit just .187 average off the 23-year-old righty, who walked 15 and struck out 32.
Julio Manon, RHP -- The 33-year-old right-hander was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 games for the Azucareros del Este, allowing 16 hits and five walks while striking out 10 in 12 innings. In the playoffs, Manon posted a 2.25 ERA and held opponents to a .143 average in four games .
Marino Salas, RHP -- Salas made two appearances for the Estrellas de Oriente, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings and picking up a win.
Venezuelan Winter League
Victor Castillo, C -- Castillo appeared in two games for the Tiburones de La Guaira and did not get a hit. The catcher walked once and scored a run.
Carlos Duran, OF -- In 11 games with the Leones del Caracas, Duran was 1-for-11 with an RBI.
Rosman Garcia, RHP -- Garcia went 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 13 games, including 11 starts, for the Tigres de Aragua. The 27-year-old righty surrendered 50 hits while striking out 32 over 51 innings.
Luis Ramirez, RHP -- Ramirez went 0-4 with a 7.66 ERA in seven starts for the Pastora de los Llanos. Opponents batted .314 against the 24-year-old right-hander, who walked 13 and struck out 18 over 24 2/3 innings.
Arturo Rivas, OF -- Rivas hit .194 (6-for-31) with one home run and six RBIs in 16 games with the Navegantes del Magallanes.
Eider Torres, SS -- Torres batted .128 with three doubles and two RBIs in 28 contests for the Pastora
