My favorite Oriole? So many greats to choose from. I remember the '83 series. One of my very few childhood memories. Lazy line drive to shortstop, and who is there to catch it none other than the man himself, the great Cal Ripken Jr. Game over, Orioles win the World Series. I was 4. My dad would tell me stories of the Orioles of the '60s. The diving, stabbing catches at 3rd made by Brooksie, the awesome outfield catches made by Blair. And the pitching. Four 20 game winners in '66. No other team has done that. EVER. Let's not forget that guy that won the Triple Crown back in '66. But my personal memories are of course scattered throughout the '80s and 90's. Many a weekend spent on 33rd street watching the O's. We all remember Rick sliding across the tarp on a rain delay. We all remember chanting "EDD-IE, EDD-IE, EDD-IE!!" at the top of our lungs when he would come to bat, and the eruption when Earl would come running out of the dugout after a bad call. I know this thread is about favorite players, not favorite memories. But you can't have one without the other. There is a reason they are our favorites. All of them. Not just Cal or Brooks or Eddie or Frank. Even the guys that made a brief appearance in our memories. Craig Worthington, Sam Horn, Manny Alexander, just to name a few. Not great, but Orioles, nonetheless. I would be here all day to mention all that deserve the top spot in our hearts. But since the top spot only has room for one, I've reserved it for one, and only one. Without him we would not have a team to root for. I'm talking about The Bird. Yes, my favorite Oriole is the Oriole himself. He represents all that is good in Baltimore baseball, Orioles past, present and future. Players may come, and players may go, but The Bird will always remain a permanent fixture in the hearts of the greatest fans of the greatest team in baseball. No one can ever take that away from us.
