Default Orioles to play Mets in HOF game

NEW YORK -- The Mets and Orioles will have a chance to live out their Cooperstown dreams sooner than expected after the two clubs were selected to play in next year's Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field.
New York and Baltimore will face off in a rematch of the 1969 World Series on May 21, just a short walk away from the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, locking heads in the only in-season exhibition game on the Major League Baseball schedule.

The Mets will serve as the home team and occupy Doubleday Field's first-base dugout in the annual contest, which dates historically to 1940 and could foreshadow several future Cooperstown enshrinees.

The Mets' Tom Glavine and Pedro Martinez are considered near-locks to have their plaques one day hang on the Hall's walls, while the Orioles' durable shortstop Miguel Tejada continues to add to his personal resume year after year.

The 2007 season is already primed to be a special year in Cooperstown for Orioles fans, who have eagerly anticipated Cal Ripken Jr.'s Hall of Fame speech.

For the fifth straight year, the Hall of Fame Game is being held independently of Induction Weekend, which takes place on July 27-30.

Tickets for the contest will be released for sale on Sat., Feb. 17, with approximately 1,500 seats being made available during the annual on-site ticket sale at the museum, beginning at 10 a.m. ET.

Hall of Fame members will have an exclusive opportunity to purchase tickets over the Internet at National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown, Baseball Hall of Fame or by calling 888-HALL-OF-FAME. Tickets are limited to six per customer.

First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and will be preceded by numerous festivities, including a Hall of Fame Game Day Parade and a pregame Home Run Derby.

The Mets will be making their sixth appearance in the Hall of Fame Game and their first Cooperstown appearance since 1992 -- Tom Seaver's induction year -- when they posted a 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

The Mets have also appeared in the Hall of Fame Game in 1964 (a 6-4 loss to the Washington Senators), in 1976 (a 9-3 loss to Milwaukee), in 1978 (a 4-4 tie against Detroit in a game called by rain in the seventh inning) and in 1982 (a 4-4 tie against the Chicago White Sox in a game called by rain in the eighth).

The Orioles will be making their sixth scheduled appearance in the Hall of Fame Game, the first for the franchise since 1998, a 7-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Baltimore owns a 2-2 record in Hall of Fame Game play, with its 1990 scheduled game against the Montreal Expos canceled due to rain. The Orioles also appeared in Cooperstown in 1961 (a 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers), in 1967 (a 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds) and in 1983 (a 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals).
