Default Glavine expects mixed reception in New York

Quote:
ATLANTA (AP)—Tom Glavine is heading back to New York this weekend, but the 303-game winner won’t have to face the full wrath of Mets fans who might be harboring bitterness over his final start with the team.

Glavine is on the 15-day disabled list for the Atlanta Braves with a strained right hamstring. He won’t be activated until Tuesday, after the team has left New York to begin a two-game series in Washington.

“There’s some people I’m looking forward to seeing,” Glavine said. “I’m sure there will be some people who are happy to see me and some who aren’t so happy to see me. There’s nothing I can do about that.”

Glavine spent the past five seasons with the Mets, winning 61 games and helping the team reach the NL championship series in 2006. But his final start in New York was one of the worst of his career: The lefty got only one out and was charged with seven runs in a loss that completed the Mets’ historic collapse, handing the division title to Philadelphia.

When the Braves open a three-game series in New York on Friday night, the 42-year-old Glavine will be watching from the dugout. But he figures to get noticed, perhaps on the video board.

“I won’t be on the field too much, so I don’t know whether I’ll be able to get a proper gauge,” he said, when asked about the reception he expects. “I’m sure it will be mixed at best.”
