Quote:
Clint Sammons hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as the Peoria Javelinas stormed back to beat the Mesa Solar Sox, 9-4, in Arizona Fall League action Tuesday. Sammons, the Atlanta Braves' sixth-round pick in 2004, went deep with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning to put the Javelinas on top to stay. The 24-year-old catcher also ripped an RBI single and scored in the seventh as the Javelinas (5-2) added on five runs.
The five RBIs eclipsed Sammons' season best of three, which he accomplished four times, and he matched the career high set with Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach in an 8-3 win over Frederick on Aug. 26, 2006. He also hit a grand slam in that game.
"It's been a little while," Sammons joked. "I had a good opportunity, was able to get a good count, 3-2, and he [reliever Hunter Jones] had to come in with a fastball, I think. I got a good swing on it."
Sammons hit .269 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 23 games at Myrtle Beach and .243 with five homers and 36 RBIs in 83 games with Double-A Mississippi. He received a brief call-up to Atlanta and made one start, going 2-for-3 in a 3-0 loss to Houston on Sept. 30.
"I think you always kind of hope for the opportunity, but it's something you never expect," Sammons said of his big-league debut. "It was definitely a nice surprise. We [Mississippi] got knocked out of playoffs on Sept. 10 and I was flying to Shea Stadium on the 11th."
J.C. Holt (Braves) went 2-for-4 with a two-run single, Brandon Hicks added two hits including an RBI single, Matt Tuiasosopo (Mariners) had two hits and scored two runs and Jeff Clement crossed the plate twice for the Javelinas.
Mariners prospect Ricky Orta (2-0) allowed just one hit and fanned one in two scoreless frames for the win. Jarrett Grube (Rockies) fanned three in two perfect innings, and starter Joseph Woerman (Mariners) allowed two hits and two walks, fanning three in two shutout innings.
Astros farmhand Jimmy Barthmaier (0-1) surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk while recording just four outs. Solar Sox starter Mitch Boggs (Cardinals) allowed two hits and two walks, striking out two in two scoreless frames.
Matt LaPorta stroked an RBI double in the third for Mesa (3-4).
