Smoltz signs extension
The Braves continue to lock in players they believe will be the face of the franchise.
John Smoltz signed a contract extension thru 2010.
Smoltz, who will turn 40 years old May 15,
says he wants to pitch beyond that point, but is that possible?
The Braves Skipper thinks so: "If he wants to, he could,"
Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "He stays in such great shape."
He's added a couple of more pitches over the years,'' Cox said.
"He throws a split, a changeup -- which he didn't have early in his career.''
So Smoltz was confident on Thursday Talking about pitching into the future:
"I'll say this, it's not going to be a 'shape' issue," Smoltz said. "I am able to keep myself in pretty good shape. It will come down to how well I'm throwing the fastball, and my breaking pitches. "I will know when the time is right. I don't want to hang around and be a five-, six-inning guy."
