Opening Day Win!
The Brave are being picked to finish third in the NL East this season, but don't tell that to Edgar Renteria. the Braves shortstop belted two homers on Monday afternoon including the game winning shot in the tenth inning. The game was tied in the Eight when Renteria socked his first of the season then in the tenth with Kelly Johnson on board took a 2-2 pitch out of the yard. The funny thing was he was up there to bunt the runner over but with two strikes was swinging away. "I tried to put the ball in play and got lucky that the ball went out," said Renteria.
"Either team could have won it with one swing, and we happened to be the first club that swung it and got ahead. An extra-inning ballgame, I think it's a great start," said Manager Bobby Cox.
Catcher Brian McCann added a homer of his own in the fourth-inning hitting a two-run shot. After Starter John Smoltz was chased from the game the revamped bull-pen did their job giving the Braves four scoreless innings only givin the Phillies a hit and one walk.
"We need to feel like whenever we're tied, we're going to win the game," Chipper Jones said. "Last year, it was so tough. We blew 29 saves, and it was tough on the psyche of the ballclub. But a few of these [close wins] can turn that psyche around."
Braves 5-3 over the Phillies
